THE skinny jean trend has been around for quite a while now, but recently got a revamp when a splash of colour was added. Many celebrities like Fergie and Victoria Beckham have been spotted wearing bold colours from electric blue to green, but the question is: Can these coloured pants be worn daily?
Kampus-Volksblad went out in search of coloured skinny jeans and came across some interesting pieces.
Thembekile Mrototo, a first-year Media Studies and Journalism student, said he needed something to wear to a Valentine’s Day bash at school. He initially wanted black jeans, but could nog find the right size. He decided: “I’ll just take the purple, honey.” He says he loves colour, but also wears regular jeans. According to him, there is space for any kind of cut in the fashion world “as long as it’s worn well”.
Nicole Tarentaal, a second-year LL B student, said she really liked skinny jeans. “I think it’s funky and cool and it fits my personality in a weird way.” She bought her pair for Christmas. Her family had a black, red and white Christmas theme. When asked what made the skinny jeans different, she simply replied: “It’s all in the fit.” She prefers skinny jeans to other fits, because it’s good for the figure and can easily be worn with boots in winter.
Thandabuntu Rixana, a BA Politics student in his first year, said what he liked about the skinny jeans was “the way they hold my body”. When asked if he preferred skinny jeans above others, he said he liked all kinds except baggy jeans.
Sae is a third-year BAgric student from Botshabelo. He has a very specific and distinct style and therefore had his pair of skinny jeans custom- made for him. “I have someone who designs for me,” he said. He only wears skinny jeans and says: “I like wearing them because they look good on me.”
Lari le Roux is an honours student in Sitogenetics and lives in Soetdoring. She says she bought her skinny jeans, because “I knew I could pull it off”. She feels regular jeans are boring and she likes the bright colours.
Mohau Mokotso, a second-year LLB student of House Kagiso, says he does not prefer skinny jeans above other cuts and usually wears slim-fit jeans. When asked why he did not go for the normal black or blue jean, he said: “I wanted to try something new.”
